Gold Coast

The Lowdown: Gold Coast

Just the name the “Gold Coast” should tip you off that this neighborhood is all about the bling bling.  Walk down State, Dearborn or Astor Streets and you´ll probably have to pick your jaw up off the ground after seeing all the monster houses.

The Gold Coast is where you´ll find a lot of old money.   The spectacular mansions and quiet streets give the neighborhood more of an Upper East Side of Manhattan feel.   But two or three blocks away, the scene is pure Chicago with North Avenue and Oak Street beach, Lake Shore Drive and skyline views.

The manicured gardens and wrought-iron gates exemplify the beauty and privacy of the historic neighborhood.   Homebuyers and renters looking for something less grand can also find a few high or mid-rises to choose from.

Lifestyles of the Loaded and Fabulous: Gold Coast Residents

Because the of the Gold Coast´s appeal among established (and loaded) Chicago families, many of the residents can be described as “mature adults.”  At the same time, it´s proximity to Michigan Avenue (just a ten-minute walk), River North and the Loop, makes it an appealing place for empty nesters who aren´t ready to surrender to the senior center yet.  It´s not really a magnet for folks just out of college, but it does attract a handful of professionals in their late twenties and thirties who appreciate the prime location.

See and Be Seen: Things to Do

The epicenter of the Gold Coast is often referred to as the Viagra Triangle, (don´t get mad at me – I didn´t come up with the name) which is formed where State Street and Rush Street intersect. Inside this geometric hot spot, you´ll find trendy bars and restaurants, wealthy old(er) men looking for some lovin´ and friendly young ladies seeking their companionship.  The scene attracts Chicago´s beautiful and fabulous, who often arrive in exotic sports cars and luxury vehicles.

If the Viagra Triangle doesn´t sound like your thing, there are plenty of great dining and shopping alternatives in the Gold Coast, making it a convenient neighborhood if you like to eat out and enjoy the city on foot.
